78Sir John Lawes SchoolEnrichment and ExtraCurricular ActivitiesWe offer a range of enriching academic andvocational courses to support students’ post-16aspirations. Details of these, and any relevantentrance requirements can be found in thefollowing pages.There are also many opportunities to enjoy activitiesbeyond purely academic study and all students areexpected to take advantage of these. Many Sixth Formstudents act as academic mentors, meeting regularlywith a younger student to support their literacy ornumeracy skills. Alternatively, others choose to act asPeer Mentors to help younger students in theirtransition to secondary school. We run a YoungLeaders of Learning programme in Year 13 whereSixth Form students deliver lessons to youngerstudents. Students can also take part in the BarNational Mock Trial Competition.We have a range of visiting speakers throughout theyear, during Year 13 core enrichment lessons and alsoduring assemblies. Our external speakers have rangedfrom university professors, the Disabled Ski Team ofGreat Britain, engineers and drivers from MillbrookProving Ground, the Unit Production Manager for theJames Bond Films and Mark Lawson, one of ourformer students who became a pilot with the RedArrows Display Team. We also have annualpresentations from charitable and volunteeringorganisations, including Oxfam.In Year 12 all students have one week of WorkExperience where they are encouraged to seekplacements relevant to their future career aspirations.In Year 13 all students volunteer locally for oneafternoon for a half-term where they learn valuableskills of organisation and team-work as well as givingback to the community. Some of our Sixth Formersarrange to help in homes for the elderly or for disabledpeople. Others support in local primary schools or inafter school clubs. We welcome students taking theinitiative in other community projects.Students also have the opportunity to take part inexternally recognised schemes such as the SportsLeaders Award. Each year students take part in theYoung Enterprise and Dragon’s Apprentice schemeswhere they can gain invaluable entrepreneurial skills,and we are very proud of the number of awards theyhave gained over the years. As well as a Journal Clubfor students interested in Science and a SeniorReading Group for those of a more literary bent, wehave an active Debating Society for budding politiciansand anyone who wants to have their voice heard.There is also the Bar National Mock Trial competitionfor anyone interested in a career in law.As befits a school with a proud musical tradition, manyor our Sixth Formers are leading players in the school’sbands and ensembles. Sixth Formers are also heavilyrepresented on the annual Music Tour, travelling toplay at venues across Europe and the UK.Every yearwe also have a Senior School drama production;extravaganzas have included ‘Cabaret’, the amazing‘Les Misérables’ and Arthur Miller’s thought-provoking‘The Crucible’.
