F
or the young and t alented across the globe,
coming to L A to launch a c areer in showbiz
is a daunting challenge. Carly Chaikin feels
she was ble ssed for having grown up in Sant a
Monica and having her life — friends, family,
familiarity — already set in the sunshine of
SoCal. “I can’t imagine growing up in, say, Mi ssouri,”
she says, “and coming to L A and having to e st abli sh
an entire life on top of tr ying to work in thi s crazy
industr y.”
But that’s precisely what most people do, and if it
sounds near impossible, understand that you’re
not tr ying to conquer the whole indu str y at once
— a false notion di scouraging enough to make you
lock yourself in your f urniturele ss new apar tment .
Chaikin had but one connec tion in the enter t ainment
industr y, and no ac ting c redits under her belt — or
even experience — but that was all it took to get
things going.

The cont ac t was an agent , who sent Chaikin to a
coach for evaluation. The coach saw the talent ,
referred her to another coach, who referred her
to a manager who took Chaikin on as a client and
remains her manager to this day. Soon she got her
first callback and landed a role in The L ast Song with
Miley Cyru s.
Ju st like a prize fighter, an ac tor needs good people
in her corner, and Chaikin has stuck with the same
team of reps, lawyers, and others looking out for her
best interest . Becau se while t alent i s individual, a st ar
does not shine alone, but is par t of a constellation
of bodies whose gravit ational relationship ensures
st ability. “I blindly tru st my manager and agent ,” she
says, “and knowing I have people looking out for me,
properly representing me, and most of all believing
in me i s the biggest thing . Other wi se they wouldn’t be
out there speaking highly of me in quite the
same way.”
