AN AWKWARD
ENCOUNTER
Matt Holtman (S’13) and
Margaret (Booher) Holtman (BS’15)
Matt and I had chemistry lab and recitation together freshman
year. I distinctly remember the first time I saw him. He was
the first one in the classroom, sitting at the back in his ROTC
uniform. About a month into the semester, I was running late
to class and hastily sat down in front of Matt. Five minutes
later, he tapped me on the shoulder, and I turned around.
He said, “Umm ... are you sweating?” Confused, I replied,
“Yes. I was running late to class, and it’s a little hot. Why?”
He slowly answered, “Well I saw sweat on your back and
thought I’d ask.” I smiled awkwardly and turned back around,
obviously weirded out. Matt sat at the lab bench behind me
that semester and we chatted briefly and learned a little
about each other. I went home for winter break and told
my family about the sweet boy who had weirdly asked me
if I was sweating. The second semester of freshman year
we had multiple classes together and spent a lot of time
together. Once, when I was walking down Third Street toward
McCutcheon Hall, I got a message that read, “Put your hand
in the air.” I immediately put my hand up, then realized how
silly I looked in a crowd of students with my hand in the air.
I turned around and saw Matt a dozen yards back, laughing.
We went to Wiley Dining Court and ate dinner together that
night. I had to know what had possessed this guy who was
a complete stranger to ask me if I was sweating, so I asked.
He laughed and said, “I wanted to talk to you so I tapped you
on the shoulder, but when you turned around my mind went
blank. I couldn’t think of anything to say.” —MARGARET HOLTMAN
I SAVED YOU
A SEAT
Danielle Herbignat-Kent (LA’98)
and Jason Kent (A’99)
I was running a little late to biology class, and there
weren’t many seats left when I arrived. A cute boy
pointed and said, “Here, I saved you a seat.” We
realized we had a lot in common after talking just
a few minutes. We were made for each other and
have been married 20 years. —DANIELLE HERBIGNAT-KENT
