STEPHENS FOREST
ONE OF THE MORE RECENT ACQUISITIONS FOR THE DEPARTMENT, STEPHENS FOREST BECAME PART
of the University through the generosity of the Frank Stephens Sr. family in 2003. Frank
Stephens Jr. and his wife, who have since relocated to California, maintain contact with
Carlson and occasionally visit the property. Located seven miles northeast of Delphi,
its 104 forest acres include a ridge that overlooks the remnants of the Wabash and Erie
Canal. Nearly 25 acres of tilled land was planted with trees in 1971–72. The plantations
consist of mostly black walnut along with smaller red oak and tulip poplar plantings.
The site’s rich soil promotes fast growth, high productivity, and excellent timber quality.
“Stephens loved this property so much, he used it as his family’s recreation place
to enjoy,” says Beheler. “He allowed some of the native species, like oak and poplar, to
flourish into these majestic trees.”
