PURDUE
NO. 1
THE BLACK WALNUT GENETIC
improvement program initiated by Walter Beineke (A’60)
in 1967 resulted in the University’s most famous tree—Purdue No. 1. Over two decades,
researchers collected and
grafted specimens from more
than 400 superior black walnut trees found throughout
the Midwest to identify trees
with the best progeny for producing high-quality black walnut timber. From that group,
nine cultivars were patented,
including Purdue No. 1. An
abundant nut bearer, the tree
has a dominant straight form
that made it an attractive and
valuable specimen. Although
the University no longer holds
the patent to Purdue No. 1, it’s
still available commercially.
