In this, our very first Which Craft ?
feature, we take a look at the liquid
magic of Grey Trees Brewery from
the Cynon Valley.
Grey Trees Brewery was founded in 2011
by pub landlord Ray Davies. Having started
brewing with a one barrel set-up at his pub
in Llwydcoed ( which incidentally means
‘grey trees’ in Welsh ), Ray and his team now
produce on a much bigger scale at a ten
barrel capacity site just outside the town
centre in Aberdare.
The Grey Trees range currently stands at
eleven craft ales, each lovingly crafted with
quality ingredients sourced from around the
world such as America and Australia, but
mostly the UK. There is a tasty, fresh flavour
to suit every ale connoisseur’s palette.
Grey Trees can often be found on tap in
good bars and pubs, and by the bottle in
selected restaurants, off licences, delis, and
foodie shops. You can also purchase directly
from the brewery shop in Aberdare. Prices
start at £2.20, with presentation packs at
£8 and multi bottle packs of 4 craft ales at
£11. And if you’re feeling particularly
thirsty, you can also pick up a mini keg from

A really beautiful copper coloured bitter, with a crisp flavour and a dry finish,
named in honour of local conductor Griffith Rhys Jones (or ‘Caradog’) who led
the famous 460 strong ‘Côr Mawr' choir to victory in several competitions.
