Merthyr Tydfil.
Famous for once being the
epicentre of iron production
worldwide.
Some of its celebrated Sons and
Daughters include Joseph Parry
(composer), John Hughes
(industrialist), Laura Ashley
(designer), Julien Macdonald
(fashion designer) and
Johnny Owen (boxer).
So maybe now is the time for
Merthyr to recognise a new Son ?
Experienced chef Jamie O’Leary,
who grew up in Merthyr, has set
out to put this Valleys town
firmly on the culinary map with
his fine dining restaurant JOL’s.
Having previously trained at the highly acclaimed
Hardwick restaurant in Abergavenny as Sous
Chef to Stephen Terry, Jamie O’Leary has
brought all his culinary skills and talent back
to his birthplace of Merthyr Tydfil. Jol’s opened
for business a couple of years ago now, and
has since built a reputation for high standards
of food and service. Jol’s ethos is very simple fresh, seasonal, locally sourced quality produce,
wherever possible.
The restaurant itself also impresses. A clean
stylish interior, immaculately set tables, and
when the Valleys weather allows, large french
windows that can be opened up lending a
semi ‘Al fresco’ feel to the dining experience.
But let’s not get too carried away with just the
decor here. It’s the food that people come to
Jol’s for, and boyo is it good !
Every dish that makes it out of the kitchen and
on to your table has been lovingly created with
passion and flair. The food isn’t just cooked to
perfection, it’s also presented to perfection.
Jamie’s pedigree as a chef is clearly evident
and it won’t be long before this restaurant is
bestowed with a major award.
