THE BARREL
1957–2017
T H E R E G U L AT O R
The first wooden barrel was most likely
developed by the Celts. For 2,000 years,
barrels were the preferred form of
shipping or storage container.
The modern day keg made of aluminium,
steel or plastic was introduced in the mid
20th century to replace the somewhat
outdated and inconvenient wooden barrel.
To tap the barrel, one had to use a hammer
to knock a wooden tap into the barrel,
making it quite hard to change barrels and
to avoid flat beer.
CO2 runs through a regulator and drives
beer out of the keg. However, changing
CO2 cylinders is complex, requires tools
and causes downtime.
