“Figure what out?”
“That when you make a list of everything you know about you, whatever you did not list, is what you don’t know about yourself.”
“Are you kidding me? That’s not a game, Binnie, it’s a trick!”
“Call it a trick, call it a game, what you call it doesn’t matter. What
matters is that it works. Your question was answered!”
“Have you gone mad? That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.”
“I just invent the games, my friend. How you play them and what
you learn is entirely up to you.”
“Okay,” said Soo-kang. “You win. I didn’t list what I don’t know,
so now I know everything I didn’t know about myself because it isn’t
on the list—makes perfect sense! But please don’t tell anyone, they
might throw me into a white truck with bars on the windows and take
me somewhere far, far away.”
“Don’t overthink it, Soo-kang. Just let it be what it is. By the way,
what were the very last things you put on the list?”
“I don’t remember.”
“That’s a little hard for me to believe. You have an impeccable
memory. What were your last thoughts?”
Soo-kang hesitated for a moment, then said quietly, “Well, after I
listed a few things, I stopped and decided to listen to music instead—
but after I turned the music on, my mind just kept going with its own
list. And I’m not entirely sure, but I think my last thoughts were: I love
to love, and I love being loved just as I am.”
“Seems that a lot of souls are sending out the same thoughts these
days.”
“What does that mean?”
“Nothing,” said Binnie. “It doesn’t mean anything. It’s supposed to
be sunny and warm tomorrow. Don’t dress up, think water and sand,
and come as you are. I’ll see you at noon.”
Soo-kang hung up, leaned back, and stared at the ceiling . . . Everything I didn’t list is what I don’t know about myself, he thought. What
did I not list? . . . Suddenly he started to laugh . . . Geez, if I knew what
it was, it would have been on the list!
