Barrow of Baboons
The Halsted family founded their business by manufacturing wheel
barrows. For Fee and her family, the wheel barrowis a proudly revered
object because it has been such a helpful means of transport for so
many African people.
We see wheel barrows being used as a stretcher, wheel chair, water
cart, shopping trolley, removal van, hearse and pram. Many scenes
that we encounter with a wheel barrow are amusing, yet this function
is vital.
Bennet Zondo’s Barrow of Baby Baboons being pushed by dad
evokes a sense of family fun and we are reminded of playful
childhood memories.
Jabu Nene’s use of earth tones and patterned motifs that decorate
this sculpture link it to the Zulu craft of basket weaving, whereby
natural dyes and pigments are used to stain the grasses.
