Oryx Herd
The oryx antelope, known as the ‘thoroughbred of the desert’, can live
in vast herds of up to two hundred animals in desert environments.
Somandla Ntshalintshali has been inspired by the elegance of the
oryx and its spear shaped horns. He has created these oryx bowls
representing a herd. He has curled their limbs into foetal position
around a bowl-shaped torso withhorns cleverly folded back for
protection and functionality.
Senzo Duma and Siyabonga Mabaso have painted the herd in the oryx
colour, light ochre which is contrasted with black and white patterns,
designing a striking trio.
At Ardmore, there is often a special surprise, and Somandla has given us
a sneak peek at a new born oryx, illustrating the importance of rebirth
and the survival of the species.
