Safeguarding Bowls
We (The English Indoor Bowling Association Ltd (EIBA), Bowls England (BE), English Short Mat
Bowling Association (ESMBA), The British Crown Green Bowling Association (BCGBA), English
Bowling Federation (EBF), Disability Bowls England (DBE) working in partnership with the Bowls
Development Alliance (DBA) are committed to safeguarding all those who participate in our sport,
ensuring they can do so in a safe, positive and enjoyable environment. We aim to enable all of our
clubs and county associations to provide safe environments for all participants.
Everyone in bowls has a part to play in safeguarding young people and adults at risk. We have
created a variety of guidance documents, templates and educational resources, alongside the core
safeguarding policies, to make it easier for clubs and volunteers to embed good safeguarding
practices throughout.
It is not possible to eliminate all risks but it is important that those in bowls with a specific
responsibility for junior players or adults at risk can demonstrate that they have assessed the risks
and taken all steps to minimise them. All individuals working and participating in bowls have a role
to play in developing a safe environment to encourage children to play and enjoy the game.
A copy of the Safeguarding Bowls Policies & Guidelines can be downloaded from the BDA website
www.bowlsdevelopmentalliance.com/safeguarding/ This provides clubs/Counties with information
on good practice and outlines the processes that needs to be followed if there is an allegation or
concern.
Templates are also available that clubs can make use of. These include a draft safeguarding policy
for the club to adopt, job description for a Safeguarding Officer, and guidance on what to do if taking
children away on a trip to play bowls or permissions that are needed for someone to take
photographs of children playing bowls.
The EIBA Ltd as a National Governing Body must ensure that all children are protected and kept
safe whilst participating in the sport of bowls.

Training
Coach Bowls provides a range of training on behalf of Safeguarding Bowls to support Clubs and
County Associations to provide a safe environment for all participants. This includes courses for
those who work with junior bowlers and adults at risk.
Coach Bowls have also launched online ‘Adult Safeguarding in Bowls’ courses. The course will
provide an ideal opportunity for all bowlers to increase their knowledge of safeguarding from the
comfort of their own home. It will be delivered as a virtual classroom via Zoom – with full interaction
with the tutor and the other people attending the course throughout.
