ABSTRACT
This concept paper follows the development of the project8 Changing
Educational Systems through a WCD Leadership Programme9 and
argues the importance of integration of the Ethical-moral/spiritual
dimension of the human in formal schooling, if schools are to contribute
in a relevant manner for the human development of their students. Part
of the WCD framework of this project, this fundamental dimension of the
person is, more often than not, disregarded by formal school education.
We note that this dimension is even absent from the main international
educational frameworks. However, in a world marked by educational
pessimism, the T-Wave (omnipresence and impact of the digital world),
the pandemic and war in Europe, education for the cognitive dimension
is not enough. And, as the results of learning outcomes on national and
international measurements from 2021 on seem to be showing, the way
we are schooling youngsters is inefocient and has therefore time and
space for a more holistic (integral) approach.
In this context, we argue that a whole child development (WCD)
approach to education, though not a new idea, is especially relevant if
we hope to create a peaceful, sustainable, humane world for all.
