Cometh the hour
In the face of this ‘clear and present danger’
today’s paint businesses can be seen to take one
of three forms:
1.
The company set up to create good value for its customers and a
return for its shareholders.
Examples would be the mainstream trade paints.
2.
The company that is aware of its environmental and social
impact and seeks to reassure the consumer that their product
presents no harm to them.
Examples would be the well-known premium paint brands.
3.
The company that is aware of the positive and negative impacts
of its industry and that endeavours to explain and measure this
impact. Within this type there are some that take active steps to
reduce these impacts and to mitigate their effects.
Examples would be some of the new ‘consumer’ brands.
To varying degrees these companies have
business models that are all designed to deliver
profit for themselves – they are inward focused.
