Our Social Handprint
People and communities matter as much as the planet we share and
measuring and taking responsibility for the impact we have on our fellow
human beings is important too.
Here a proper system of measurement is much less advanced than with
environmental criteria. It cannot be predicated on simple usage data, so
we have identified the areas where we believe we have social impact, both
negative and positive and where we could have further beneficial impact.
Transparency
We start by having an open relationship with our potential and
existing customers. Much the most important thing we can do is to
tell them what they are buying.
This we do by publishing a full list of the ingredients we use, why we
use them and what we do to them as part of making our paints. Most
paint makers do not do this, beyond the requirements of compliance
in the form of a Safety data Sheet (usually available on request, rather
than pro-actively volunteered).
It’s a matter of frustration for us that our wood paint still contains
a tiny amount of acrylic in the binder - 8% compared to 40% in
mainstream paints. We originally sold a fully natural wood paint,
but feedback was that it could be tricky to apply and that the finish
wasn’t always as good as it could be. We are open about this but
serious in our intent to reformulate this binder to obviate the need
for any fossil fuel material.
We have recently become signatories to the Anti Greenwash Charter
Put simply, what’s in the tin, is on the tin
