Rewriting this story for our time
Business not as usual
With a product as ubiquitous as paint it is
imperative that we minimise any harmful
impact. For this to be discharged properly
we know that we have to stop making it with
fossil fuels – it’s as simple as that.
Help is at hand though when one considers just how long we had
been making paint before the discovery of tar sands and crude oil.
What if we could harness old learning and combine it with modern
understanding with the aim of making the protective coatings we
need without the huge burden of pollution that current methods
entail?
Enter ‘gentle chemistry’
“The linear ‘take-make-dispose’ system,
which depletes natural resources and
generates waste is deeply flawed. It can
be replaced by a restorative model in
which waste does not exist as such, but
is only food for the next cycle”
- Ellen MacArthur
