The first locomotive arrived in
Alaska in July 1898. On the 21st
of that month, the WP&Y operated
its first train from Skagway to a
point four miles north of the town.
By the end of the following year,
the company had 13 locomotives,
eight passenger coaches and 250
freight cars.
