From Skagway to Bennett,
British Columbia, the track climbed
almost 3,000 feet in just 20 miles. At
times it rose on a 1:25 gradient along
cliff-hanging turns. Two tunnels and
numerous bridges and trestles had to
be built, with almost everything having
to be imported – including all the timber
used on the tracks and bridges, as
native wood splintered far too easily.
