Marine Science 2023

Audrey Azoulay, Director General, UNESCO, at The Art of Saving the
Ocean Symposium, Frost Museum, Miami, December 2023
To pioneer new approaches to science communications,
we brought the work of the programme to new audiences
at the world’s leading modern and contemporary art fair:
Art Basel in Miami. Working in partnership with Re:wild,
Nautilus, and the Frost Museum in Miami, the team hosted
a one-day event to showcase the science and art of
restoring nature. Bringing together diverse international
technical experts, including our programme scientists, we
explored island-ocean connections in conversation with a
broad and engaged audience.
To ensure management and policies in the region
are based on the best scientific evidence, we have
consolidated and shared publications, data, and
information from the programme to support marine spatial
planning, particularly in Mauritius and the Seychelles.
The marine science programme continues to build its
active engagement with the UN Decade of Ocean Science
for Sustainable Development through the Foundations
Dialogue, the newly launched UN Decade Collaborative
Centre for the Indian Ocean Region, and the Early Career
Ocean Professionals network.
