science techniques are being used to determine the
societal drivers of fishing, the current understanding
of fisheries regulations and stakeholder perceptions of
management options. The key output of the project,
due to conclude mid-2024, will be recommendations
for long-term sustainable fisheries management around
Diego Garcia.
Philippines Large Scale
Marine Protected Area
The Blue Nature Alliance is developing the first large
scale marine protected area in Asia off the coast of
the Philippine island of Luzon with the Philippines
Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and local
partners, including ZSL-Philippines. Members of the
marine science programme were invited to participate
in a stakeholder workshop in the Philippines in
November 2023 to share knowledge and experiences
from the Chagos Archipelago, particularly the
application of science to improve conservation,
management, and enforcement.

United Nations Decade of
Ocean Science for Sustainable
Development 2021-2030
The Indian Ocean marine science programme has been
an endorsed Action for the UN Decade of Ocean Science
for Sustainable Development since 2021. In 2023, we
participated in the Foundations Dialogue in Monaco
and the advisory committee for the 2024 UN Decade
conference in Barcelona. We were also engaged with
the development of the Indian Ocean Region Decade
Collaboration Centre, hosted by the Indian National
Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and
launched at the end of 2023, which acts to catalyse and
coordinate Decade Actions at the regional level. Heather
Koldewey has joined the governing body where she will
represent the marine science programme.
