established researchers and has a major
focus on training the next generation of

Since the programme began in 2017,
we have trained a total of 99 students.
2023 was a big year for postgraduate
finishers, with six students completing
their PhDs with one MSc and two BSc
graduates, we were also delighted that
one UK A-Level student worked on the
programme for their Extended Project
Qualification. Going into 2024, there are
29 students in the programme (22 PhD,
six MSc, and three BSc students). We
continue to be committed to regional
capacity building, with nine current
students from the Indian Ocean region
including a new PhD student from India
and MSc student from Seychelles joining
the programme in 2023. Students were
lead authors on seven of the scientific
papers published this year, as well
as presenting at many national and
international workshops and conferences
and participating in fieldwork.
