8th Grade Capstone
Field 8th graders embark on a week-long journey to Costa Rica during Intersession. This immersive science and servicelearning program emerges from Field’s commitment to experiential, interdisciplinary learning. It is an extension of our middle
school science curriculum looking at human impacts on the planet aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainability goals—
a key focus in 8th grade science.
Students live and study Costa Rican ecology by trekking into the rainforest and partnering with the local Brörán community
on economic, ecological, and cultural sustainability projects. In their journeys, they plant trees supporting reforestation projects
and learn about climate change impacts. They learn about microplastics and their effects on marine life and coral reefs,
followed by service work cleaning beaches and sorting through the trash collected. Students return to their final semester of
middle school having developed cross-cultural understanding through the mutual sharing of stories and experiences. It’s a
transformative adventure in personal discovery, leadership building, and design thinking.
