FORTY ONE | STRATEGIC PRIORITY THREE
• A partnership with Expleo led to a bespoke
training solution for their engineering technician
apprentices. It includes a ten-week programme
in core knowledge, skills and behaviours to
kickstart the apprenticeship.
A VITAL INGREDIENT FOR HEAD CHEF TOM
Head chef Tom Gaskin believes the earn-asyou-learn approach helps employers develop
and retain the best young staff.
• Marks & Spencer enlisted DCG’s assistance with
developing its engineering staff. The resulting
programme includes the training of higher
apprentices leading to HNC quali昀椀cations.
• Land-based staff forged links with Chester Zoo
to offer an apprenticeship programme focusing
on conservation, zoo keeping and other careers
dedicated to animals.
• Further emphasis was placed on professional
body recognition to enhance apprentices’ career
prospects. Engineering technician apprentices,
for instance, received an informative
presentation from The Institute of Mechanical
Engineers before their End Point Assessments.
There were national plaudits for individual
DCG apprentices too. Ali Amin, who studied
at the Roundhouse as part of his engineering
apprenticeship with Shawpak, was named
Advanced Apprentice of the Year.
We are proud to have been providing
apprenticeships for the last ten
years and our partnership with
DCG has been very successful.
We have worked with the College
assessors to ensure our apprentices
receive support at all times
and get a real understanding
of the world of work in order to
complete their apprenticeships.”

Manager, Derby Homes
Meanwhile Derby Homes electrician Joe Johnson
received two top awards in a matter of months. He
secured the Apprentice of the Year accolade at the
2023 Building Communities Awards, which celebrate
excellence within housing and construction.
The previous autumn he triumphed in a similar
category in the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire
Apprenticeship Awards.
Tom oversees DCG apprentices at various
stages in their training at Fairways at Chevin
Golf Club. When he joined the restaurant,
he put himself through the Chef de Partie
apprenticeship and went on to become
head chef.
He said: “Building a young team through DCG
means we can all develop together. By taking
on apprentices moving through Levels 2 and
3, there is continuity and it allows staff to build
their careers in one place.”
HITTING A PERSONAL BEST
Derby Arena wellbeing adviser Lyndsey
McLaughlin jumped at the chance to take a
Personal Training Apprenticeship via DCG.
Lyndsey was keen to further her knowledge
after working at the council-run gym for
eight years.
She said: “I liked the practical side where I put on
a class and showed the assessors what I know.
My apprenticeship experience has encouraged
my colleagues to take extra quali昀椀cations.”
