DCG Impact Review 2024 - Flipbook - Page 37
THIRTY SEVEN | STRATEGIC PRIORITY THREE
One of 21 Institutes of Technology being established
across England, the EMIoT is supported by the
Department for Education, which has provided
capital funding and strategic direction, and by the
Gatsby Foundation.
DCG will become one of three hub sites for the
new Institute. The Stephenson Building on the
Roundhouse campus is currently being expanded
in a £4.3 million project which will provide new
facilities for construction, digital, engineering
and leadership training.
Scheduled to be completed by September 2024,
this net zero expansion will feature cutting-edge
technology, allowing teaching to be carried out
on-site or anywhere in the world. Its state-of-theart classrooms and collaborative workspaces are
designed to provide students with a hands-on and
immersive learning experience.
By 2030 the EMIoT is set to have 1,200 students on
its books. DCG courses due to come under the
auspices of the Institute range from T Levels and
Extended Diplomas to HNCs, Higher Technical
Quali昀椀cations, Foundation Degrees and Honours
Degrees in various STEM subjects.
Looking ahead, the Group aims to develop further
EMIoT programmes in computing, business, health
and social care, architectural technology, quantity
surveying, civil engineering and STEM teacher
training.
Micro credentials are also on the drawing board.
These short courses, typically taught over a period
of 4 to 12 weeks, enable individuals to reskill for
careers in rapidly growing and dynamic industries,
without the time and 昀椀nancial commitment of a
full study programme. They can stand alone as
independent credentials or provide academic
credits towards validated programmes.
Because it enjoys substantial input from leading
names including Rolls-Royce plc, Bloc Digital, Fujitsu,
Alstom, National Grid/ESO, Uniper and Toyota, the
EMIoT can import great ideas from industry as it
昀椀netunes its curriculum.
NEW ROUTES TO SKILLED JOBS
The introduction of Higher
Technical Quali昀椀cations
(HTQs) is gathering
momentum at DCG.
Developed with employers
and delivered by industry
experts, these specialist
programmes at Levels 4 and 5 are aimed at
adults ready for the next rung of the career
ladder or retraining for a different industry.
DCG’s 昀椀rst HTQs are Higher National Certi昀椀cates
in Construction Management and in Modern
Methods of Construction. They can be taken as
credible standalone quali昀椀cations or as part of
a Higher Apprenticeship.
Both have been approved as HTQs by the
Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical
Education as meeting the latest in professional
standards and encapsulating the knowledge,
skills and behaviours identi昀椀ed by employers for
success in the workplace.
HTQs advocate a highly practical approach to
learning, so students are challenged to respond
to client briefs or undertake group projects. It
is envisaged that T Levels will become an ideal
pathway to HTQ studies.
