Science and theology consultations on a multidimensional anthropology versus the usual bipolar forms of thinking about the human
being (such as body/soul, body/mind, brain/mind, etc.) formed a
further focus of the cooperation. The results were published in several
volumes. Probably the most important volume appeared in Germany
and the USA under the title The Depth of the Human Person: A Multidisciplinary Approach. The project brought together theology, philosophy, history, social sciences, and ethics, and, from the natural sciences, biology, physics, and psychology. Participating colleagues came
from the USA, England, Scotland, Germany, Japan, and India.
Michael Welker (Ed.), The Depth of the Human Person:
A Multidisciplinary Approach (Grand Rapids, MI:
Eerdmans, 2014).
After the US financial crisis in 2008, the focus of activities shifted
from the USA to Germany, and FIIT became the center of the organization. Remarkably, the American research funders declared: “Whether
you carry out your projects in Princeton or in Heidelberg is irrelevant
– we will support them either way.”
