Binnie gave him a nonchalant half-smile, then said, “Well, K is one
of those people who makes her own path—and she keeps things interesting. While everyone else is stuck in a rut, she’s off to find the wildflowers.”
“Sounds kind of flighty.”
“Believe me, she’s anything but flighty—probably the most focused
person you’ll ever meet . . . Besides writing one bestseller after another,
she owns a successful publishing company, works with people all over
the world, and is fluent in quite a few languages. She also has a special
interest in children. One of the reasons she’s here is to visit the orphanages she’s been supporting for years.”
“How come none of that was on the website I looked at? No mention
of anything other than her passion for music and foreign films.”
“K is an extremely private person, which is why she’s often called
the mystery-poet—there’s very little personal information about her anywhere. However, if you read her work, it will tell you more about her
than you can imagine.”
“Well, unless you can recite something off the top of your head, I
think it’s a little late for that . . . What part of the U.S. is she from?”
“She’s not actually from the U.S.—she was born in South Korea.”
“She’s Korean?”
“She was born here but has lived most of her life in America.”
“Does she speak Korean?”
“Yes, she does,” said Binnie. “And I’m a little surprised you don’t
already know that. Although the details of her private life are not shared
with the public, her love of languages is no secret. On the website you
mentioned, there’s a list of links to all her books, blogs, and social networking pages . . . Did you really not go to any of them?”
“No, I didn’t. Anything else I should know?”
“Well,” said Binnie, reaching for his phone, “there is one more thing
you should probably know.”
“And that is?”
Binnie scrolled through his photos, then stopped and looked up. “Do
you happen to remember getting a birthday card on the friends-network
