the promise of the tea-gods

An hour later, going out the door for another run, he was still laughing. Leave it to Binnie to turn my brain upside-down, he thought. One
of us is totally crazy and I really hope it isn’t me.
They walked along the shore, breathing in the music of night waves.
“Are you feeling better now?” asked Binnie.
“Much,” said K. “Thank you again for everything. Tomorrow morning I shall wake up dancing!”
Binnie put his arm around her shoulders. “Wouldn’t surprise me a
bit, but if you don’t wake up feeling like you’re back to one hundred
percent, please let me know.”
“I’m already back to one hundred percent, Binnie. And in the morning, as soon as my feet touch the waves, I’ll surpass even that.”
“How quickly you bounce back never ceases to amaze me. But tomorrow is a very important day—and your energy must be as pure and
as high as it goes. So if it takes a little longer this time, just let me know.
Okay?”
“I will, but why is tomorrow more important than any other day?
That’s an unusual thing for you to say.”
“As per the plan, I can’t tell you the details. But I guarantee you,
when the most important part of the day arrives, you’ll know what I’m
talking about—and you’ll also know why your energy needs to be at its
highest. What I can tell you is that I had to invent a new kind of day,
where two days happen simultaneously; and that day is tomorrow. It
could be a little intense, but there’s no other way to do it.”
“Well, a simultaneous day sounds kind of fun—will be interesting to
see what happens when you glue two days together. As unexplored as
that particular phenomenon is, I’m willing to give it my best shot.
What’s the plan?”
“It’s a two-part plan,” said Binnie, “with a break in between. I’ll
handle what happens during the break. And you just do whatever you
feel you need to do during that time.”
“So, before the break is the first day? And after the break, I do the
next day?”
