H. K. O'HARA
Temma felt K’s hand lightly squeeze her own. “She just squeezed
my hand, Bin. That means she can hear us—and that’s always a good
sign.”
“Good,” said Binnie, glancing back at K. “You just hang on, Princess. We’re almost there.”
Skidding to a stop on top of the hill behind the beach house, Binnie
gathered K into his arms and ran down the hill—straight into the Yellow
Sea. As soon as the water touched her, she opened her eyes.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “Thank you so much.”
Binnie laughed softly. “You know, I think I just ruined my favorite
shoes.”
K closed her eyes and let the waves and Binnie’s laughter wash over
her. Then she opened them again and smiled. “Honestly, Binnie, who in
this world runs into the ocean with their favorite shoes on?”
His eyes sparkled. “The man who knows that the woman in his arms
is much more important than the shoes he’s wearing.”
“Well, no hero of mine should have to give up his favorite shoes. I’ll
buy you another pair, Bin—I promise.”
“No worries, it’s a good reason for another trip to Italy. Not that we
need a reason to go to Italy, but if we ever do—shoes would be a pretty
good reason to go, don’t you think?”
“You know me too well,” said K. “Although, my love for Italian
leather—especially when made into an irresistible pair of high heels—
is no greater than your love for Italian food, sweet coffee, and whatever
fun thing you can find to pour into a wineglass. Yes?”
Binnie tilted his head back, laughing. “Yes, my dear, and it keeps us
both human—which keeps us connected to the rest of the world. So,
first we’ll go shoe-shopping, then we’ll sit back and relax at Sofia’s finest table. Okay?”
“All right,” said K. “Sounds like a really good plan.”
“I love a really good plan,” said Binnie.
“I know you do. And thank God for that. No one could ever come
up with a better plan than you.”
