She smiled as they continued on their way; through the exit doors—
out of one world, into another—led by four men dressed in black, and
closely followed by twenty more.
In the pre-dawn darkness, two porters waited patiently, safeguarding
a mountain of luggage. Binnie led K around them and into one of six
waiting cars. “Are you all right?” he asked.
“Yes, I just need to catch up with the day—my inner-clock is telling
me that today is today, but the clock of Korea is quite certain that tomorrow is today . . . As soon as the two decide to agree on something,
I’ll be fine.”
“Jetting through all those time zones can be exhausting. You look as
fresh as morning, but I’m sure you’re tired.”
“A little, but nothing a few hours of sleep won’t fix.”
“Well, the beach house is about a hundred miles from the southernmost edge of Seoul, but this early in the morning it won’t take us long
to get there. Will you be okay for a bit longer?”
“I’ll be fine, Binnie. Thank you for making it all so easy. I don’t
know what I’d do without you.”
Binnie gleamed. “And I don’t know what I’d do without you either.
You’ll love the beach house. It’s totally private with lots of open
space—and you can have a huge slice of the Yellow Sea all to yourself.”
“That sounds divine,” said K. “Absolutely divine.”
“Did you sleep at all on the plane?”
“Only for a few minutes at the very end of the flight. Hardly enough
to call sleep—more like a little pause between legendary moments.”
Binnie laughed. “I love your mind—it’s like a gallery of artistic
thoughts that beguile and amaze me to no end . . . Did you try playing
the game?”
“I did, but I didn’t get very far.”
“What were your last thoughts before you drifted off to sleep?”
“Well, I started mentally listing things I know to be absolutely true
about myself, then I looked at my hands and it felt like I was reaching
