Turistguide Kerteminde - Flipbook - Side 17
From the years 1700-1865 a watchman patrolled Kerteminde. The
watchman was the local policeman of the time, and it was the municipality that paid his salary. Today, the tasks are handled by other official
authorities, but you will enjoy following in the footsteps of Knud Pfeil
around the town. Join Tuesdays or Thursdays at 8pm during the season.

»I give the tourists a special experience, and along the way I talk about the
life and history of the town. The tour begins at Farvergården in Langegade
8, and then we continue past merchant houses and through narrow streets.
The tour ends in Trollegade, where the lamp in front of Høkeren is lit.«

The watchman’s primary task was precisely to light the town’s lamps.
There were nine of them. Another task was to keep the town’s wells
with drinking water free of leaves, dirt and pests.
The watchman’s wife and children took part in the work. The wife had
a special task. She made sure that there was always cod liver oil for the
lamps. If she managed to save a little on oil throughout the year, there
was money to buy extra goods at Høkeren.
The watchman was also responsible for ensuring that there was peace
and order in the town’s taverns when they closed in the evening. Some
»tired« tavern guests simply had to be escorted home, while others,
sometimes unruly types, were taken to the watchman’s little jail.
Knud Pfeil has worked as a watchman since 2018, and he loves his
job. In the past, he was a self-employed master builder and is a fourthgeneration resident of the town.
If you want more true stories, you must take a trip with the watchman.
Knud Pfeil leads the way and talks about life in the merchants’ houses,
in the small homes and in old Kerteminde. See you at Farvergården.
