Going Commando in Soho:
More than just a pop-up shop

After nearly 20 years, Commando
launched its 昀椀rst retail operation.
Known as the gold standard in sleek, raw-cut thongs and
undergarments, this company waded into the stand-alone retail
space by opening a pop-up location in New York’s Soho this fall.
But it was more than simply an oppor tunit y to sell
undergarments and apparel. According to Vermont-based
founder, CEO, and designer Kerry O’Brien, “This was 昀椀rst and
foremost an opportunity to learn and experiment. There’s
nothing like face-to-face with a customer. Greene Street will
inform so much of our future products and experiences,” says
the award-winning entrepreneur.
The 2,200-square-foot space at 75 Greene Street checked all
Commando’s wish list boxes. “A grand foyer and the welcoming
storytelling room that leads you into the ultimate closet,”
explains O’Brien. This allowed for such cheeky details as tiny
disco balls embellishing the wall opening into the “closet,”
conveying Commando’s spirit and O’Brien’s desire for women
to love and have fun dressing.
