How Genius Works
Visit Karl Lagerfeld:
A Line of Beauty
There are few designers as prolific as Karl Lagerfeld. From
winning the International Woolmark Prize in 1954 to Balmain,
Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his eponymous label, Karl
Lagerfeld, he was the ultimate multitasker at every step of his
career.
This body of work is the center of the current Costume Institute
exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art called Karl
Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.
Instead of a complete retrospective, his story is told through his
primary mode of communication — sketching and illustrations.
Throughout the exhibition halls, visitors see Lager feld’s
sketches alongside the completed pieces, sometimes in
multiple variations. There are approximately 150 pieces on
display with sketches showing his complex creative process
with his premières, or head seamstresses.
The exhibition will be on view at The Met Fifth Avenue through July
16, 2023. In addition to the museum’s regular hours of operation,
there are special evening hours every Sunday until 9 pm. (The rest
of the Museum is not open during these hours.)

Mugler’s
Magnificence
Lace was just the start…
Designer Thierry Mugler is known for his bold silhouettes and
use of avant-garde fabrication techniques and materials—
including glass, Plexiglas, PVC, faux fur, vinyl, latex, and
chrome. From the perspective of Revealed, it’s his use of lace
and inspiration from lingerie silhouettes that are of interest.
An all-encompassing collection of Mugler’s work, Thierry
Mugler: Couturissime, recently wrapped up a world tour at the
Brooklyn Museum of Art. Created and curated by the Montreal
Museum of Fine Arts, it was seen by more than one million
visitors in Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and France
before ending in Brooklyn.
