so it’s thrilling to see her adopt a decidedly
modernist attitude about her o昀昀-screen style.
But that doesn’t mean she has to eschew the
lingerie trend dominating fashion — case in
point: At March’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party,
Jacobson wore this head-to-toe custom look by
Louis Vuitton, which included a leather halter
triangle bra embellished with stud detailing
over a matching skirt crafted of leather and
crepe.

The world’s most high-wattage reality star once again shut down
the Met Gala red carpet with her spectacular — yet controversial
— look. Like Zendaya’s entrance gown, this custom design came
courtesy of Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano and
consisted of a couture strapless corset rewoven from antique
silver brocade, paired with a metal-tooled skirt of 昀氀owers, leaves
and sprigs, intended to evoke thoughts of lace, interlinked with
silver chain and mirror fragments, crystal pendants and pearls,
while Kardashian sported a gray cashmere shrug-style sweater
around her shoulders. On its own, the Margiela design was
stunning in its concept and craftsmanship; but Kardashian once
again caused an uproar only in the degree of execution, with
corset lacing so tight to appear both painful and unrealistic.
By the Wednesday following the Met Gala, social media had
erupted with questions: How was she able to breathe? What kind
of surgery may have taken place to create such an unnatural
proportion between her waist and hip lines? And most
importantly: What kind of image was Kardashian sending about
body image? Her Met Gala look unquestionably showcased
an exquisite corset, a piece certain to trickle down and drive
trends in the months to come; but ideally, the moment also will
inspire conversations about balance, the reality of a woman’s
proportions and body positivity.
