Our Impact
2023
From Our Interim CEO
Throughout 2023, we sustained
higher volunteer and giving rates
year over year by analyzing systems
and identifying interventions to
provide more flexible options for our
frontline employees. We finished
2023 with a volunteer participation
rate of 45% (best in class, especially
in light of CSAA’s majority remote
workforce) and donation rate of 32%.
This led to us receiving the 2023
Benevity Goodies “BeCause Award”
for creating true partnerships with
nonprofit partners and working with
them to find out what they really
need to achieve and advance their
social missions.
In 2023, CSAA increased its
employees participating in volunteer
efforts by almost 400 employees and
engaged 8% more of our workforce
than the previous year. In total,
1,684 employees completed more
than 17,000 hours of volunteering
throughout 2023. This includes more
than 50 events curated in partnership
with our grantees and nonprofit
partners, 15 virtual volunteer activities
in partnership with our employee

resource groups and 20 events
curated specifically for individual
teams to make an impact as a group.
This big leap in participation can be
attributed to several changes we
made in 2023:
• We embedded virtual and in-person
volunteer activities into existing
team meetings and professional
development programs.
• We reduced barriers for our
employees to make an impact
during their workdays with increased
flexibility to volunteer at a time
convenient to them.
• We ensured all new-hire
onboardings included a community
impact presentation, a virtual
volunteer opportunity and $25
in rewards to be provided to any
nonprofit of their choice.
• We experimented and became
more creative with how we
communicate our volunteer
opportunities and impact, both
internally and externally.

Practice
By participating in Nudge the Good’s
technology accelerator, we explored
how to use behavioral science
and implement “nudges” into our
communications to identify the most
effective ways to communicate with
our employees. We also adopted
the Impact Genome Registry and
platform as part of our shift from
outputs (e.g., volunteer participation
rate and number of hours) to instead
identify outcomes of our giving and
volunteerism.
Investing in community
CSAA’s Community Investments
Program (CIP) invests in low-income
and underserved communities by
investing in projects that are responsive
to community needs, qualify as green
investments and/or have a significant
positive impact on the economic
welfare of the community. One percent
of CSAA’s investment dollars are
earmarked for the program.
In 2023, we committed an additional
$31M toward low-income housing
developments across the United
States, including a predominance
in California, through partnerships
with other insurance companies and
banking institutions.
Supporting access to quality
affordable healthcare
CSAA is a longstanding member of
the Purchaser Business Group on
Health (PBGH), a nonprofit coalition
representing nearly 40 private
employers and public entities across
the United States that purchase
healthcare services for more than
21M Americans and their families.
PBGH has a 30-year track record of
incubating and scaling new, disruptive
operational programs that lower
healthcare costs and increase quality
across the United States.
CSAA serves on PBGH committees
to support programs designed
to reduce wasteful healthcare
spending and improve the
healthcare quality and experience
of employees, specifically when it
comes to advanced primary care,
comprehensive maternity care, health
equity and cost transparency.
