From Our Interim CEO
Profile in partnership:
Climate Resiliency Challenge
In May 2023, CSAA
launched a global Climate
Resiliency Challenge with
co-sponsors, including
global design firm IDEO and
global service firm Aon.
With the intention of bringing
together companies, experts,
communities and thought leaders
to address problems that can’t
be solved by any one person or
company, the Challenge invited
innovators around the globe to
share their world-changing climate
solutions for the chance to win a
share of $1M in prize money. Through
the open call for submissions,
inventors, entrepreneurs and scholars
were able to propose bold, innovative
solutions to help and work with
frontline communities to prevent,

prepare for and recover from climaterelated disasters, such as wildfires,
floods, and extreme weather. More
than 400 projects were submitted for
consideration. In August, 13 projects
across three categories—Emerging
Innovator, Mid-stage Innovator and
Advanced Solutions—were selected
and awarded prize money. The
Challenge was also supported by
contributions from Arch Reinsurance,
Incite, RenaissanceRe, Guidewire, and
the Environmental Defense Fund.
It caught the attention of the White
House in September 2023. In a
LinkedIn post, the White House
Senior Advisor for Climate Resilience
congratulated the Challenge
winners. It was also highlighted in a
2023 report to the United Nations
Climate Change Conference
(COP28): Building a Climate Resilient
Future: Five Priorities for the Global
Insurance Industry. In a section
spotlighting ongoing adaptation
and resilience insurance initiatives,
the Challenge was included among
case studies “that are working to
People
Practice
tackle the existing resilience gap,
serving as valuable examples for
other stakeholders to learn from and
expand upon.”
Throughout this report, you’ll find
case studies celebrating some of the
Challenge winners and how their big
ideas have leaned into innovation to
support their communities.
Toward a more
sustainable supply chain
In 2023, we revamped
our supplier diversity
and sustainability (SD&S)
program to focus on
garnering greater internal
and external participation.
Our end goal is to increase the number
of diverse and sustainable suppliers
we use for sourcing. To that end, we
onboarded a dedicated resource to
serve as CSAA’s SD&S lead.
In 2023, we hosted two outreach
events with more than 30 top
suppliers. These events provided
suppliers with information about our
revamped program and new supplier
registration portal. The portal allows
suppliers to contact CSAA to share
their interest in doing business with
us and supporting our sustainability
and diversity procurement objectives.
CSAA is currently evaluating the
inclusion of Scope 3 emissions
for our suppliers into our GHG
calculations. To drive progress in
this space, we are taking a closer look
at our current suppliers and diving
deeper into their Scope 3 emissions.

diversity and sustainability program in
