Shelter 3 our charity for Christmas
The right to adequate housing is recognised in the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. It's the foundation of Shelter. Every day, millions of people
are being devastated by the housing emergency. Shelter exists to defend
the right to a safe home. Last year, it gave information, support and advice
to millions of people facing homelessness or experiencing unfit and unsafe
housing. Shelter defends the right to a safe home. It is trying to end rough
sleeping. It realises we haven9t built enough social homes, and that private
rents and evictions are at record levels. Daily, it sees families pushed into
grim and unsafe hostels, B&Bs and what is worse, families are miles away
from their support networks, schools and health care. Children are sharing
beds and have nowhere to play, eat or do homework. Shelter knows the
solution to the housing emergency and fights for people9s housing rights
on the ground. It has secured the delivery of 90,000 social homes a year in
the last ten years in England.
Shelter will continue to work locally and nationally to tackle the root causes
of unfit housing and homelessness. Its frontline services, firmly focused on
lasting change for individuals, families and communities, are working in
new and innovative ways to meet the urgent needs of people facing the
trauma of homelessness. Please donate. www.england.shelter.org.uk
Sevenoaks Hospital
Having heard a few rumours surrounding the future of Sevenoaks Hospital,
following the decision to move the 19-bed inpatient rehabilitation ward
due to fire safety concerns, Laura Trott, MP for Sevenoaks, arranged a
meeting with Mairead McCormick, the Chief Executive of Kent Community
Health NHS Foundation Trust (KCHFT) to discuss the situation. She was
reassured by Mairead that all other services outside the inpatient beds will
continue. They will remain in their current location before moving across
the road to the other buildings on the Sevenoaks site following
refurbishment. There are also some very early-stage plans to look at
extending the services available in Sevenoaks. The hospital will pass on
more information when received.
