The REWire
The REWire is a monthly newsletter to help our audience stay up-to-date on all race and education news, views and research. Whether
they're an educator, school board member, policymaker, concerned parent, student or just a member of the community, The REWire is
our way of keeping them informed about what is going on with race issues in pre-k to post-secondary education.
During FY 2022-2023, CREED sent out 8 issues of The REWire to our mailing list of 1,647. We covered a wide range of issues, including
Florida's ban on the AP African American Studies course, New York's ban on racist mascots across their schools, North Carolina's
education state of emergency and more.
Studying School Board Demographics
In Fall 2022, CREED's policy and advocacy intern Corina De La Torre shared her research on school board demographics across the
North Carolina in an op-ed published by EducationNC. She found women and people of color lost representation after the 2022 midterm
elections and Latinx and Asian students are the most underrepresented on school boards. The majority of school board members in
the state are white (72%), and more than one-third (35%) of school boards are all-white. Meanwhile, nearly one-quarter (24%) of school
board members identify as Black, less than one percent (0.79%) identify as Hispanic/Latinx.

Continuing this research, CREED worked with Community
Research Fellows from Davidson College on a dashboard
to further represent school board demographic data. This
important tool will be o昀케cially announced and shared in
Fall 2023.
