In 2023 the charitysupported 123 families and 188individual children and young people.Families in Grief approached Cran昀椀eld Trust forassistance in developing a strategic developmentplan for the next two to three years, and for adviceand guidance on growth and strategy. The strategicdevelopment plan was to include an income generationplan that would help to improve the charity’ssustainability in the long-term by diversifying sourcesof income and focussing on unrestricted incometo reduce reliance on grant funding. After discussing the needs of the charity to fullyunderstand the support it needed, it was agreed theproject would be a Sustainability Review to cover allaspects of the organisation’s future operations andgrowth, not just fundraising. It would also deliver anaction plan to achieve the transition of the charity fromits current position to a more sustainable model, backedup by raising funds from a diverse range of incomesources. This will support the charity’s future strategicgrowth so that it is available to its bene昀椀ciaries for manyyears to come. Devon based volunteer consultant Paulwas identi昀椀ed as having the right skills and experienceand was matched to the charity to work directly with theCEO Naomi Jefferies.Naomi and Paul met regularly and tracked their progressthroughout the project using an action plan with setdates to review progress. As Naomi added,“with the best will in the world – you arepulled from pillar to post in a small charityand don’t always have this time to focusand properly re昀氀ect.”Naomi appreciated having a local volunteer, living in thearea and understanding the locality, but also with a muchwider management view, as it helped her to think aboutwhat is possible without being unrealistic or playing toosafe.16
