FROM THE DESK// M E R R A N K E L S A L L F C PACONSTRUCTIVELYCHALLENGINGOUR VIEWSWelcome to the June issue of INTHEBLACK.It feels like the first half of the year has flown by. It’sbeen especially busy for CPA Australia’s Policy andAdvocacy team. Many jurisdictions in which we operate haveannounced their government budgets for the year, and in Australia there’s been a Federal Election aswell. We provided expert analysis and commentaryon these (and other) policy developments. With a membership of over 170,000 professionals,we know that there is a diverse range of viewpointsamong our members. From time to time, the Policyand Advocacy team hears from members who saythey disagree with a position we have taken orquestion whether we should involve ourselves inan issue at all. That’s totally understandable. We greatlyappreciate this feedback, which we carefullyconsider and respond to. Having our viewssubjected to member and public scrutiny andfeedback is a critical part of our policy andadvocacy process. The CPA Australia constitution obliges us to takean interest in “legislative, economic and socialmatters”. We have built a wealth of policy expertiseacross financial, business and accounting subjectmatters to enable us to do this. When developing our policy positions, we considerthe relevant standards and legislative and regulatoryframeworks to assess whether they are operatingwell and what can be done to improve them.We consider the perspectives of members, theprofession and the public interest. Our policy positions are thoroughly debatedby Policy and Advocacy team members. We havefostered an environment of constructive challenge, whereby team members are encouraged to questionand present alternative viewpoints.Members play a key role in shaping our positions. The specialist expertise of Centres of Excellencemembers, as well as engagement with discussion6 ITB June 2022“The CPA Australiaconstitution obliges usto take an interest in“legislative, economicand social matters”.
