2024 has been a very subdued year for us in terms of outputs. The
construction sector has struggled throughout the year with a significant
reduction in the number of new houses being built. Council spending
has been under pressure and major infrastructure projects delayed. This
slowdown has been exacerbated by the wet start to the year and as I
write today all I can see is snow!
However, looking to 2025, we remain optimistic that the economy will
start to recover albeit slowly and a number of large infrastructure projects
should kick start and lift activity levels for the Group.
We have strengthened our Executive team with the recent appointment
of Stephen Dryden as our Group Managing Director for Quarries.
Stephen comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience within the
industry, accompanied by a tremendous level of drive and enthusiasm.
We look forward to the positive impact Stephen will have on the Group.
Despite the many challenges we face in these difficult economic times,
I take a lot of pride when reflecting on our achievements and progress
throughout the year. Our Team continue to pursue innovative initiatives
and seek ways to reduce the carbon impact of our operations and the
wider industry.
The launch of CemLime® is an exciting chapter for our business following
its recent compliance and certification to BS 8500 and BS 7979. This now
paves the way for CemLime® to replace up to 20% of cement in concrete
mixes thus significantly lowering its carbon footprint.
It is great to see our Surfacing Teams engaged in works as far afield
as Shetland and the recent development of our Quality App which
underpins the company mantra of ‘Built on Quality.’ We continue our
commitment to youth development by attending School Career Fairs.
This is a fabulous opportunity to showcase the business and promote
the construction sector to the next
generation.
2024 feels like it has flown past,
with Christmas fast approaching.
I am proud of everyone’s efforts
and continuing commitment to our
business, ensuring a successful and
sustainable future.
I wish you all a Very Merry Christmas
and look forward to working with you
on the many opportunities that the
New Year will present.

Chairman
