A Day in the Life of... Ross Fotheringham
Bid Writer
Background
During my time at Robert
Gordons University, I was
fortunate to be a part of
Scotland’s first ever digital
marketing cohort and
obtained my BA (Hons). A
journey which hit turbulence
towards the end with the
arrival of Covid-19, bringing
all classes and assessments
online.
As part of my studies,
students were required to
attend a placement with
a local business, the idea
being to get a flavour for
what our careers would look
like in reality, and hopefully
give a boost to the business
in the process. I was lucky
to be accepted with a local
business in Stonehaven where
I took care of their social
media, producing the photography, videography,
and graphic design. I was offered an extension to my
apprenticeship in a freelance role.
As graduation drew closer, I was then offered
a position as a Content Specialist with a firm in
Aberdeen. Here I sat somewhere between business
development and graphic design. After an enjoyable
stint at Three60, I was then offered the role of Bid
Writer at Leiths and happily accepted.
A Day in the Life
No day is the same for me at Leiths and I have been
fortunate to be involved in a wide variety of its many
functions and departments and have hopefully
learned a thing or two during that time! I primarily
create our tender proposals with the aim of winning
as much work as possible. This draws upon those
many functions and departments such as Operations,
Finance, HR, and HSEQ to create a cohesive proposal
that is persuasive, but technically sound. Recent
wins have included the HARD FM Minor Works
Framework for C&S and Planing, Lining and Traffic
Management Frameworks with the Argyll and Bute
Council for Markon. I also handle our pre-qualification
questionnaires, sub-contractor competency
assessments, and many accreditation statuses with
bodies such as Safecontractor or Constructionline.
I have also been involved in the development of the
marketing and branding of the company, which has
extended to being part of the ongoing creation of our
new website, managing our social media presence,
photographing works, launching the Leiths Press
Club, and creating new promotional material such as
flyers and banners.
Most recently, I am a Placement Supervisor for our
new Modern Foundation Apprenticeship Maya, who
joined us in September and will be joining us every
Wednesday from 1:30-4:30pm, so feel free to say
hello.
Outside of the office I have been fortunate to be
involved in a few great things. I have attended the
‘Build Your Future’ finals at Pittodrie, a program that
aims to excite the next generation about a career in
our industry, aswell as the CECA awards in Glasgow
and the Aberdeen Association of Civil Engineers
Dinner. Most recently, I attended the VIBES Awards
in Glasgow on 12th November, where Leiths were
finalists in the Product Scotland Category (see article
on page 11).
Personal Life
In my time away from work you will find me walking
my Cocker Spaniel ‘Oat’, going to the gym, playing
golf badly, or watching a movie.
