In 2020, Clemson University researchers were awarded
$3 million over three years to develop a personalized
professional development recommender system for
teachers that resembles the way businesses such
as Amazon.com recommend products or streaming
entertainment.
project, the research demonstrated in 19 South Carolina
school districts that solid professional development
targeted to individual teacher and school needs can
dramatically improve teacher retention (87% for project
vs. 78% for state) and increase teacher effectiveness
(92%-post vs. 71%-pre).
Researchers from the College of Education developed
this recommender system to improve teacher
effectiveness and retention while increasing student
achievement. The grant award comes from the U.S.
Department of Education Supporting Effective Educator
Development Grant Program.
As for its effects on student achievement, students in
schools with participating teachers showed significantly
higher growth on NWEA’s MAP Math test versus a
virtual comparison group of similarly matched students.
Students of participating teachers outperformed
the comparison group by an average of 25%–this
equates to months of additional growth versus the
comparison group.
