My Dear Grown-Ups
Who is Ammu? Ammu is the name my grandchildren call me.
Ammu is a delicious term of endearment used in many parts
of India. Literally, Ammu means happiness; Ammu means
sweetness; Ammu means purity.
I have many roles in my life, but my favorite role is being
Ammu. As a grandparent, I have a little more time, a little
more patience, and perhaps a little more wisdom to share. I
can express myself without boundaries or judgment and pour
out all the love, light, and laughter inside of me.
Everyone has their Ammu. My Ammu was my grandfather
whom we called Thatha. He showed me worlds beyond my
little vision – opened windows and doors to faraway places and
people – and shared stories of his long ago.
My inner world was a world of music. My sad times have a
song memory; my happy times also connect to tunes. I was
hungry for any music I could hear and thankfully it was all
