Must-see Mersea
Mersea is the UK’s most easterly inhabited island and is based on
both the Colne and Blackwater estuaries. It is accessible from the
mainland via the ‘Strood’, a short stretch of road that sometimes
floods up to twice a day. It has been a holiday destination since
Roman times and as it’s situated just under 20 miles from
Manningtree, it is well worth a day trip.
What to do:
Explore Mersea Island's shingle beach, but watch out for sticky
'Mersea mud' at low tide. Rent charming beach huts from The Little
Beach Hut Company on West Mersea beach. The island, a communityfocused fishing village, offers delightful seafood options, with a special
recommendation for The Company Shed's BYO restaurant. Families can
enjoy Cudmore Grove in East Mersea, featuring open grassland, picnic
tables, and a pirate ship-shaped play area. Don't miss crabbing off the
boardwalk in the village centre.
Mersea Island hosts diverse events, including Mersea Week in August
for boat races, a regatta, and fireworks. May brings the Food, Drink &
Leisure Festival at Mersea Vineyard, showcasing local foods and oysters
with live music. In July, the Secret Island Festival, an independent dance
musical event, features renowned acts for a lively experience.
Independent Ipswich
Around 10 miles from Manningtree and just a short drive up the
A12 is Ipswich, the county town of Suffolk, a port town based on
the mouth of the River Orwell. Like Colchester, it is one of the
earliest recorded settlements in Britain with over 1,500 years
of heritage. It is now home to a cutting-edge theatre and arts
scene, cool waterfront bars, cosy pubs, and a lively community
of independent shops.
What to do:
Ipswich boasts a vibrant arts scene with galleries like Christchurch
Mansion, Town Hall, Ancient House, and the Artists' Gallery. The town
features museums, including Ipswich Museum, Ipswich Transport
Museum, and Christchurch Mansion. The New Wolsey Theatre
offers drama and comedy, while the Regent Theatre hosts famous
comedians and shows. DanceEast, located on the waterfront,
promotes dance in the East of England.
For families, visit Jimmy’s Farm, owned by Jamie Oliver’s friend Jimmy
Doherty, and Alton Water, a reservoir with nature trails and water
sports. Enjoy annual events like the Ipswich Arts Festival, Ipswich Jazz
Festival, and the nearby Latitude music festival in July, offering diverse
entertainment from music to wellness activities.
