Program Tracks and Modules
NEW CAREERS IN TRANSIT
The New Careers in Transit track is intended for employees new to the transit industry.
It can be an entry level position or a career or industry change. It will explore the
career opportunities in the transit industry and how to navigate career paths. Modules
for New Careers in Transit track are:
1) Transit 101
This module provides an overview of the transit industry and the role it plays in the
community. Participants will explore the role and responsibility transit employees have
in the industry:
Exploring Transit Operations and Maintenance
Exploring Transit Planning
Community Engagement and Stakeholder Outreach
Workforce Engagement and Networking
2) My Role in the Team
This module discusses the importance of each staff member and how their role helps
achieve the agency’s goals:
Team Building
Conflict Resolution
Working with Represented and Non-Represented Workforce
Management Strategies
3) Fiscal Responsibility
This module focuses on budget and financial tracking as well as contracts and
procurement topics. It will expand on the fiscal responsibility of transit employees
leading during difficult financial times:
Budget Management and Development
Learning an Agency’s Financial System Capability
Transit Program and Project Management
4) Training and Development
This module focuses on the importance of training and development and staying
current on changing trends:
Overview of Training Opportunities
Resume and Interview Skills
Continuing Education
Networking Opportunities within the Transit Industry (APTA, COMTO, WTS)
5) Understanding Compliance and Regulatory Requirements
This module focuses on federal requirements impacting civil rights programs such as
Americans with Disabilities Act; Disadvantage Business Enterprise (DBE); Title VI and Title
VII of the Civil Rights Act; and Environmental Justice regulations.
