PROMISING PILOTS - OUR EARLY LITERACY INTERVENTION PROGRAMME
We are continuing to develop our Early Literacy
Intervention (ELI) programme for pupils in Reception
and Year 1, which we began piloting in two
Warwickshire schools in 2022. Both schools have
high numbers of Pupil Premium and English as an
Additional Language children. The ELI programme
offers keep-up support, tailored to each child and is
delivered by professional Early Literacy
Interventionists who are phonics experts. They target
children at risk of falling behind with class phonics
and not meeting expected reading levels.
EARLY LITERACY INTERVENTION
High frequency one-to-one sessions
Target pupils work with their Early Literacy
Interventionist 3-5x per week
One of the pilot schools has continued with the
programme and our Schools Development Manager
(appointed during the 2022-23 school year) is
beginning to talk to new schools interested in
introducing the ELI programme.
The programme is also part of a feasibility study
with the University of Warwick’s Institute for
Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) which
supports educational innovation. The study will
evaluate the perceived effectiveness and potential
impact of the ELI programme on early reading skills
for pupils aged 5-7 years who have been struggling
to keep up with their peers and expected progress.
Team members of the study will visit six classes (3 x
Reception and 3 x Year 1) at six points throughout
the 2023-24 academic year (December 23 – July 24).
In July 2023 the results from the pilot were:
