WELCOME
FROM OUR
CHIEF
EXECUTIVE
2022-23 was a milestone year for us. We started
with a bang - renaming ourselves in February from
Innovations for Learning/TutorMate to Chapter
One. We believe this new name better reflects our
work, and our desire to help children at the start of
their reading journey - that 8first chapter9 of the
success story of their life.
In July, we were delighted to celebrate our
organisation9s five year anniversary, with a fantastic
volunteer recognition event. It was a reminder that
we have come a long way in our mission to provide
children, regardless of their background, with vital,
timely reading support. From just 380 children
supported in 2018-19, in two areas of the country, we
closed the 2022-23 year having supported 2,151
children in 10 geographical areas with 38,379
reading sessions. We9re immensely proud that 5,500
children have benefited from our programmes in the
last five years.
But our story of growth is not just about numbers. It
is, at its heart, a story about human connection:
children in profound need of reading support, paired
with adults who can help them.
As you read this report, and learn more about our
impact in 2022-23, please do remember that positive,
human message at the core of our work - together,
we really can make a difference. With the
involvement of the whole of our society - adults
supporting young people, businesses investing in
deprived communities, schools opening their doors
to external support - we can transform the future of
the next generation.
