OUR APPROACH TO DEMONSTRATING MEASURABLE
SOCIAL IMPACT FOR BUSINESS

EDUCATION, SOCIAL
MOBILITY AND INCLUSION,
BOTH REGIONALLY AND
NATIONALLY.
Social value measures the positive value businesses
create for the economy, communities, and society.
The UK government now requires that social value is
evaluated as part of the tender process for most of
its biggest outsourcing contracts – some of which
are worth billions of pounds. Local councils are
adopting similar approaches.
provides a volunteering opportunity for their
employees which links straight back to SDG4 Quality Education - and has a measurable impact on
the children taking part in regions of deprivation.
Quality Education also underpins many of the other
SDGs including No Poverty, Decent Work and
Economic Growth and Reduced Inequalities.
From a business perspective, Chapter One's timeefficient, flexible model for online volunteering
enhances a company's employee engagement,
whilst fulfilling social value commitments around
education, social mobility and inclusion, both
regionally and nationally. The online reading
volunteers programme is accessible to all levels of
employees at our partner organisations and has a
measurable impact on the participating children.

THE LINK BETWEEN
READING FOR
PLEASURE AND
ECONOMIC GROWTH
We provide real-time reporting to our corporate
partners on volunteering hours and an end-of-year
report on impact, detailing the reading progress of
the children supported by their employees (most will
improve by 2-3 levels out of 9). We also share data
from our wider evaluation of the programme across
a number of schools and regions.
Many of our corporate partners have signed up to
the UN Global Compact and have placed one or
more of the Strategic Development Goals (SDGs) at
the heart of their social value or ESG strategy. The

Social value demonstrates, in simple monetary terms,
the positive impacts that an organisation has on the
wider community. The National Themes, Outcomes
and Measures (TOMs) is a framework for delivering
excellence in measuring and reporting social value.
Developed by one of our corporate partners, the
Social Value Portal, the framework has evolved into a
social value measurement standard across the UK.
Using the TOMs framework, we estimate that our
corporate partners, with the support of Chapter One,
delivered £324,878 of social value/social return on
investment in 2022-23*.
*This was calculated by multiplying the average number of hours
Chapter One online reading volunteers read with children by the
proxy value of £16.93 which is given in the TOMs framework for
calculating Social Return on Investment (SROI). 38,379 reading
sessions x 30 mins or average reading session time = total
volunteering (19,189.5) hours x £16.93 = £ SROI £324,878.
