OUR SCHOOLS
In 2022-23 we saw an increasing demand for our
online reading volunteer programme from schools.
They told us that due to the legacy of Covid, the
pressures families are under with the cost of living
crisis and the decline in reading for pleasure
amongst young people, the children they teach
are sorely in need of opportunities for vital reading
practice with encouraging adults.

All the children that Chapter One supports attend
schools serving low-income areas; all have a
higher than national average (23%) percentage of
pupils in receipt of free school meals and many
also have over 70% of children who have English as
an Additional Language.
During the year, we partnered with 75 schools in
Bradford, Cumbria, Doncaster, East Sussex,
Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, London (Barnet,
Camden, Haringey, Islington, Newham and Tower
Hamlets), Middlesbrough and Peterborough.
New schools are recruited through our own local
outreach work and recommendations from
existing partners or other charities we collaborate
with. Teachers have been passionate advocates
for our work, often introducing new schools to our
community.
