new video about Chapter One for
schools. We are grateful to St Ignatius
Catholic Primary School and Earlsmead
Primary School in Haringey for their
participation in the video. Watch the

to 39.5 hours
In 2022-23 we supported 2,151 children across
years 1, 2 and 3. Due to demand from schools, the
number of children participating from year 3
increased this year. Of these pupils, we collected
reading attainment data at the start and end of
the programme for 2,110.
On average, pupils attended 18 Chapter One
reading sessions, or 9 whole hours of reading with
their volunteers over the course of the year. The
number of sessions attended ranged from 1 to 79
(30 minutes to 39.5 hours).
We were able to collect Pupil Premium data on
70% of participating children, and of those 53%
were Pupil Premium (n - 785).
'We’ve worked with Chapter One for
almost five years now and teachers
consistently report how children’s
enthusiasm for reading has
increased. It is not just the
technicalities of decoding that our
children need. It is the consistency
and reliability of the volunteers and
the connectivity children experience
with them that encourages them. The
difference they make is tangible –
almost immediate.
